When trying to figure out what’s appropriate and what isn’t in your wedding speech or wedding toast, there are some simple guidelines to follow that will help.  Making sure you stick to these rules will hopefully help keep your feet on the floor and out of your mouth.

Wash, Rinse, Repeat
While it seems like this rule would be fairly easy and obvious, it’s often forgotten.  You have to try to keep the jokes CLEAN!  Far too often funny wedding speeches (best man speeches in particular) end up with an “R” rating before they’re over.  Keep in mind who you are in company with before you break out the stories of the groom’s drunken escapades or the bride’s ex-boyfriends.  The last thing you want to do is embarrass the bride and groom or offend their family and friends.  More often then not there are children at weddings, so profanity-laced wedding speech jokes won’t fly, using suitable language is always a must.

Make Sure the Shoes Fit
Another important rule to consider is to make sure that all of the wedding speech jokes and stories you have actually have something to do with the bride and/or groom.  As good as some of the jokes and stories from your wedding or your bachelor party probably are, unless it involves the bride or groom they’re probably best left for another occasion.  Weddings are all about the bride and groom, so your wedding speech should be too.

Let’s face it, finding the right balance between seriousness and humor in a wedding speech can be difficult.  And while being inspirational and meaningful is always appropriate for a father of the bride speech, the truth is everyone enjoys a funny wedding speech.

Balance
We’ve probably all heard a best man speech or a wedding toast where the wedding speech jokes used went just a little too far, maybe even to the point of embarrassment for the bride and/or groom.  This takes you to the complete opposite end of the spectrum compared to the father of bride speech I mentioned earlier.  It’s finding the perfect balance of being inspirational and meaningful as well as humorous that’s going to leave you shining in the spotlight…as long as it’s on you that is.

So what’s the recipe for perfect balance?
There are a number of factors that come in to play when trying to find that perfect balance of seriousness and humor. The first and foremost is going to be your personality.  What type of person are you?  Are you the quirky, practical joker or are you more of the quiet type?  If you’re a daily prankster than people will to be more likely to expect a funny wedding speech out of you.  It should go without saying though, that doesn’t mean that you can’t break out of your shell and crack a few wedding speech jokes even if that’s not who you are.

The type of wedding speech you are delivering is probably going to play a big part in the equation as well.  Like I had mentioned before, a best man speech tends to be the melting pot for wedding speech jokes, but that’s not to say they aren’t appropriate elsewhere, it all depends.

Which brings me to the last factor I’m going to bring up, the overall atmosphere of the wedding/reception.  Conventional wisdom would tell you that the more formal the wedding, the less likely it would be to hear a joke-laden groom wedding speech.  The atmosphere will probably set the tone for what’s appropriate and what’s not as far as wedding speech jokes, but once again it’s going to be a judgment call.

Now whether you’re giving a groom speech, a bride speech, a best man speech or any other kind of wedding speech, being prepared is always the first step towards making the process a little less stressful.  Standing up in front of everyone can be nerve-wracking on it’s own, let alone having to give a speech!  So having at least an idea of what you are going to say when you stand up should help keep the heart rate down a bit.

For me personally, wedding speech jokes are one of the best ways to ease the tension and lighten up the mood.  Just hearing the sound of laughter in the crowd has an amazing ability to calm your nerves and give you an overwhelming sense of relief. I mean after all, who doesn’t like to hear a funny wedding speech?

Of course depending on the type of wedding speech you are giving and the overall atmosphere of the event, some wedding speech jokes will be more appropriate than others. My opinion is that best man speeches tend to be the most fitting for wedding speech jokes, but that’s certainly not true in every case .  I’m sure there are a few brides out there who can’t wait to put their stand-up talents on display at the most important event of their life, but something tells me that’s not the case for most. You really just have to use your best judgment.
